I didn't read the blurb but it turns out it's full of noncon which you know. It gets way better as you go along.ĮTA I just finished the next seasons and what should I do now? □□□□□□ My poor baby Kyum what has been done to you. I can see some people were complaining about this but this was sadly the case back then. It's important to note that low-borns (as they were called back then) were not treated very well. The story is complex and interesting so it is not just for smut. However, you can see why the noble depends so much on the young painter as we learn more about his past. The main noble is mentally unstable so some readers should beware. They are on opposite spectrums so it’s interesting to see their interactions. The eldest son of a noble becomes obsessed with a young painter. It's important to note that low-borns The author sets a realistic tone for the time period. The author sets a realistic tone for the time period. It manages to focus on very human expressions of lust and love in historical times while also revealing the social power structures and value systems of people of the period. Ultimately, this is gorgeous piece of work with surprisingly layered storytelling and characters. Revisiting chapters helped me notice subtle movements that I completely missed the first time. In that regard, it is surprising how much detail the author is able to imbue in a couple panels and how a single hand motion or gesture can reveal so much about a character's personality and motivation. Currently, he is more of a ridiculously charismatic and dangerous antagonist than a romantic male lead, though his frequent nudity does help convince us otherwise.Īs we watch Seungho pinpoint Na-kyum's weakness and use a carrot and stick approach to get him to paint, it is very interesting to watch the young artist's moral conflict in regards to his own work, his sexuality and his unlikely patron. Seungho is driven and willing to kill to achieve his goals, especially since society gives him the authority and power to do just that. Na-kyum's naivete and idealism acts as a foil to throw Seungho's deviant tendencies into stark relief. In comparison, Painter of the Night focuses on Seungho, a noble who uses his power and privilege to pursue a homosexual hedonistic life regardless of social mores of the period. While both males do lack empathy and have a casual disregard for the value of human life, Killing Stalking focuses on a serial killer, which is a completely different sort of dark male lead. The only frustration I've had so far is not with the comic at all, but rather with readers who would immediately compare Seungho with Killing Stalking's Sungwoo - a character that I happen to absolutely loathe. Rather, the artist captures expressions and emotions with such realism that I can't help but start trying to translate the sentiments that haven't been stated outright in dialogue. It wasn't even about the sexual encounters. I have found myself reading the dozen chapters available repeatedly and I can't help stopping and just gazing at the characters. Rather, the artist captures expressions and Just as Seungho is riveted by Na-kyum's work, I found myself absolutely mesmerized by the gorgeous art in the webcomic Painter of the Night, as well as the surprisingly layered story of a noble determined to offer his patronage to a young artist - whether the latter wants it or not.
